Melusso began manufacturing high quality handbags and shoes in 1945. I would assume this bag was made in the late 1940s or very early 1950s. The company remains in business today primarily known for their shoes.
The handbag is actually a large clutch with a gold plated shoulder length chain that tucks neatly into the bag. It is made of strips of snakeskin in various shades of brown from caramel to a dark mink so dark it could be black.
The bag opens via two plated knobs that slide up and release the knobs. The inside is all leather lined. One wall has a large zippered pocket (old metal zipper) and has a metal Melusso label. The other wall has a pull up mirror that is double sided and rotates.
The bag is 7.5 by 14 inches and the chain strap is 30 inches long.
Condition is as near mint as a 60 year old bag can be. The metal is all in fine unscratched condition. The snakeskin scales are all neatly in place and the stitching is unbroken. Really a special treasure from the past.
If you are a fan of 1940s and 50s movies and admire strong actresses like Katherine Hepburn and Joan Crawford, you will recall seeing them carry bags like this with their business suits.
